(More customer reviews)We now have 2 luffa plants THRIVING in our garden. They are huge! We started the seeds inside and planted well after any possibility of frost. It seemed that the plants were not growing at all for about 2 weeks and then they just exploded with growth. They are covered in blossoms, the earliest gourds are over 12" long now and more are slowly growing on vines that have spread 15' to 20' in every direction.
I planted the seedlings near the corner of our garden and the vines have overtaken the trellising and just kept going. To stay on the safe side, I built a little tent for them out of tulle from an old dress and wire from last years electric fence. Plenty of sun and rain can get through the tulle, but it kept the seedlings safe from insects (and the cat) during it's early growth. Once the plants were vining a foot or two I removed the tent and they have held their own very nicely.
Take care to germinate them properly, read about growing luffa and you simply can't go wrong with these seeds. I have never done this before and I can't wait to harvest and use our sponges.
A great purchase!

GOURD: Plant gourds if for no other reason than because they're fun! They come in a delightful, wacky array of shapes, colors, and sizes and are sure to bring a smile when you harvest them. Many will grow up fences and trellises, which makes them even more interesting and dramatic.
Luffa Bathroom Gourd: Yes really! Now you can grow your own bathroom sponges! It's the fibrous internal structure of the gourd that converts into sponges after 12 inches long. They climb or spread just like cucumbers and need very similar growing treatment. When ripe, leave in a dry place, and the outer skin will come away revealing the loofah beneath. Wash them in mild disinfectant and place in a warm place to dry completely. Fruits in late summer. Climber. The Luffa Gourd can also be eaten. It is know in Asian Cuisine as "Cee Gwa." Harvest when 6" long for eating. Can be eaten like a cucumber, or chop and stir-fry with chicken, bamboo shoots, or cashews.
